Truffaut’s most important performer, and his on-screen alter-ego, was Jean Pierre Léaud, who he discovered aged 14. Léaud softened and humanized the image of Doinel that the director had originally intended. Truffaut argued that the director should aim, not to get a ‘good actor’, but to choose the right actor, the one in whom he has foreseen the ability to grow into the role. [x]
